Coco Chanel was co-produced by Ulrike Quade Company (Netherlands) & Jo Strømgren Kompani (Norway), performed at the Daning Theatre in Shanghai on 7th and 8th May, as part of the 2019 Shanghai Jing’an Modern Drama Valley, and in Hangzhou Xixi Heaven Arts Centre on 11th and 12th May. Ulrike Quade and Jo Strømgren are fascinated by the complex history of Coco Chanel. Chanel controls the way the world sees her, and at the same time, her fashion has become a symbol of liberation.
Coco Chanel restores the life of Chanel’s legend through the puppets manipulated by the actors. The show reveals how fashion affects our values and social models, exploring how clothing becomes a body and how the body becomes a beggar.
