Following the acclaimed presentation of The Nature of Forgetting by Theatre Re in 2023, BIRTH brings another deeply moving story to audiences in Shanghai. Created by the internationally renowned Theatre Re, the production explores the often unspoken experience of pregnancy loss, giving voice to a subject that remains largely hidden from public conversation. Through stories of grief, memory, and resilience, the work shines a light on an experience shared by countless families.

Developed over fifteen months, BIRTH investigates how experiences, emotions, and memories are passed from one generation to the next. Collaborating with leading researchers in neuroscience and philosophy, the creative team explores profound questions about inheritance, identity, and the origins of memory.

At the heart of the performance are Sue, Katherine, and Emily—three generations of women whose lives are connected through an invisible web of family history. Through their intertwined journeys of self-discovery, acceptance, and hope, BIRTH offers a powerful reflection on loss, love, and the enduring miracle of life.

On the occasion of his 44th birthday, Bill has prepared everything for the perfect party—drinks, snacks, decorations, and music. There is only one problem: no one has arrived. Created and puppeteered by Dorothy James and Andy Manjuck, Bill’s 44th combines ingenious puppetry, visual comedy, and imaginative stagecraft to turn an ordinary birthday celebration into an extraordinary theatrical experience.

Balancing humour with tenderness, the performance explores loneliness, memory, and the passing of time through a rich world of balloons, miniature figures, and surreal transformations. Wordless yet deeply expressive, Bill’s 44th is a touching reminder of our shared need for companionship, belonging, and celebration.

Created by Italian company Teatringestazione, Monás is an immersive performance that combines participatory installation, choreography, live video, and electronic sound. Inspired by the ancient Greek notion of the monás—the fundamental unit of existence—the work invites audiences into a constantly shifting environment where bodies are filmed, transformed, and projected in real time, blurring the boundaries between reality, image, performer, and spectator.

Rejecting linear narrative, Monás explores how identity is shaped through acts of looking and being looked at. Through a carefully constructed dialogue between technology, movement, and participation, the performance offers a poetic reflection on perception, presence, and the power of images in contemporary life.

Premiered at Hangartfest in 2023, the work has toured to festivals and performance platforms across Italy. Teatringestazione, founded in Naples by Gesualdi | Trono in 2006, is internationally recognised for creating socially engaged and participatory performance works, with presentations at festivals including Festival TransAmériques, Santarcangelo Festival, and Teatri di Vetro.
