Dutch Performing Arts – Dutch Focus @Dance Out of the Box Festival, Shanghai International Dance Centre Theatre

  • Supported the programming and funding application of Dance Out of the Box Festival.
  • Supported the communications between the artists and the festival.

Developed and facilitated the collaboration between the Dutch Performing Arts and the Shanghai International Dance Centre, to produce Dance Out of The Box Festival. The festival highlight includes the Mandarin version immersive physical performance ’25 Feet’, alongside this were six high-definition screenings, available both online and offline, including ‘Between Us,’ ‘Home,’ ‘Vielfalt,’ ‘Freedom,’ ‘Memory Loss Inside,’ and ‘Our House is on Fire.’

These showcases provided Shanghai audiences with a unique opportunity to experience the splendour of international contemporary dance, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of China-Netherlands diplomatic relations. Highlighting the Netherlands, known for its vibrant contemporary dance scene, the festival received special support from the Dutch Performing Arts Fund. More than just a display of artistic talent, the festival offered a platform for meaningful interaction between artists and audiences, while also serving as a gateway to the global forefront of contemporary dance art during the pandemic.

  • Commissioned by Dutch Performing Arts, established a digital platform, Dutch Focus, showcasing Dutch artists’ works during the pandemic time.
  • Established and managed social media accounts associated with the Dutch Focus.
  • Communicated with the artists during the whole creative period to ensure a complete understanding and a proper promotional package.

In 2020, the outbreak of the pandemic prompted the development of the innovative Dutch Focus (China) digital platform. This platform served as a hub for information exchange and collaboration enhancement between Chinese and Dutch performing arts practitioners and artists. Dutch Focus (China) was commissioned by the Dutch Performing Arts, a division of the Performing Arts Fund NL. Showcasing over 20 groups, including renowned names such as Club Guy and Roni, Davy Pieters, Nicole Beutler Projects, Via Berlin, and BetweenTwoHands, the platform facilitated continued cultural exchange during the pandemic through digital channels and social media platforms in China.

Shades of Change (International Co-production)

  • Worked alongside with our Chinese partners in helping them to engage choreographer Annarita Mazzilli, musician Andy Higgs, costume design Ella Bai to participate this international collaboration dance drama
  • Communicated between the artists and Jinan team during the whole creative period to ensure a complete understanding on both sides
  • Supported a 5-week long creative workshop in China for the guest artists to train the local dancers and to develop the production
  • Arranged the theatre’s showcases in Slovakia and Hungary from venue sourcing, touring schedule, audience engagements, and media and PR.

Shades of Change was produced by the Shandong Academy of Arts and the Shandong Provincial Theatre Creation Studio. Performance Infinity worked closely to the creative team in recommending international artists visiting China for the collaboration and presenting the piece locally in China as well as Slovakia and Hungary.

Shades of Change is inspired by the Chinese traditional culture “I Ching” which try to lead the viewer to change the perspective of the world and the humanities. It is using the third person interpretation of the bird as a creative idea, using the theories in “I Ching” to express the colour and change of the five elements, thus triggering different thinking of the present people treating tradition, treating nature, and treating life. The bird is both a realistic bird and a bird of thought, leading the audience to appreciate and find the beauty that the reality should have.

  • Focused on the Mandarin-speaking communities in London, who might have been neglected as a minority audience group.
  • Sharing the value and knowledge of theatre for everyone, helping to cultivate future audiences.
  • Bridging the gap between youth and theatre professionals, deepening interest in the performing arts.

Aiming towards contributing to audience development and cultural diversity in the UK, we launched a series of audience events among the UK-based Chinese community. The events included theatre tours and seminars surrounding the Royal Shakespeare Company’s The Orphan of Zhao, a V&A theatre collection tour, Chinese New Year celebration and Women’s Day special event surrounding the National Theatre of Scotland’s production tour in London. We had about 15 to 20 participants joining each event, aged between 18 and 35, ranging from students to professionals, and it was also the very first theatre experience for many of them.

Performing China on the Global Stage @ Leeds

  • Provided support to participating Chinese academics and theatre professionals to arrange relevant cultural activities and travel.
  • Provided media management to cover and report this event through UK-based Chinese media.

We interviewed the participating Chinese theatre professionals and academics during the 2-day event and provided full-coverage of the event through UK-based Chinese media platforms. We also supported scheduling and booking of the participants’ itinerary, providing consulting services around local cultural activities to ensure a high value and time-optimised event.

Masterclass and Workshop

  • Promoted the famous Taiwanese Artist, and his theatre company, across the London theatre cultural landscape.
  • Advised different solutions targeting Western theatre participants and Chinese communities in London. 
  • Increasing awareness of the nature and cultural significance of traditional Chinese Opera.

We offered consulting services for the Cultural Division of the Taipei Representative office in the UK, to introduce Mr. Wu Hsing-Kuo, the famous Taiwanese artist, actor and Director of the Contemporary Legend Theatre, to Londoners through local audience events. Through the well-organised event and workshop, the audience could easily come to understand the background of the artist himself, the style of traditional Chinese Opera in modern theatre, and what’s more, there was even a session to let people follow his demonstration and learn the movements of traditional Chinese Opera physically. Following a seminar at Asia House to promote the Contemporary Legend Theatre Company, we also fulfilled the role of audience and media management for the event.

  • Covered the first ever UK-China new writing collaboration to provide practical reference for future participants.

Collaborating with the contemporary art magazine ART.ZIP, which is a seasonal English-Mandarin bilingual magazine published throughout the Asian and UK markets, we delivered the special theatre issue featuring more than 30 British theatre companies, venues, educational organisations, academics and professionals. Educated and informed Chinese readers about theatre “new writing” through rich content and well-planned structure.

ART.ZIP ISSUE12 – “Visual Theatre”

  • Over 100 pages featuring reviews and informative insights into 40 British Theatre-related companies and professionals.
  • Cross-field cooperation once again with the highly popular visual arts magazine. 
  • With a circulation of over 50,000, published throughout the Asia-Pacific, we aim to bring an insight into British Theatre culture to Asian audiences.

Inspired by the success of our collaboration the previous year, we continued our co-operation with art magazine ART.ZIP, contributing to yet another edition. As our company has grown and become more deeply rooted in London, we were delighted to share our network of British Theatre professionals, and set the issue theme as “Visual Theatre”.

 

Over 100 pages covered more than 40 British theatre companies and professionals, and we were extremely grateful to be able to incorporate interviews with Mark Baldwin of the Rambert Dance Company, Penny Francis of the Puppet Centre, Slavka Jovanovic of The Little Angel Theatre, Leo Warner of 59 Productions, Joseph Seelig of London International Mime Festival. This special edition also features articles for The Roundhouse, NoFit State, Blind Summit, Complicite, DV8, Kneehigh, Shunt, Punchdrunk, Le Patin Libre, Fuel and Theatre O.

UK Theatre Management Training

  • Planned a 4-day event to incorporating visits from, and communication with, leading British theatre venues and professionals to give a general picture of the London based theatre industry landscape.
  • From cultural policymaking, programming, and producing to audience development and marketing, the topics are careful selected according to needs. 
  • Learning from practical experience, it was also a great experience for our staff.

We took charge in the project for CPAA to achieve the first UK-China theatre management experience tour at the end of 2014, organizing a 4-day event for 20 leading Chinese theatre managers and artistic directors to visit leading British theatres.

 

We were honored to invite policy-makers and theatre professionals from Mayor of London Office, Arts Council of England, British Council, The National Theatre, Royal Shakespeare Company, Barbican Centre, English National Opera, London International MIME Festival, Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, the Society of London Theatre, Lyric Hammersmith Theatre, Glynis Henderson Productions and KT Wong Foundation, to be our visiting organizations and guest speakers.

 

The participating Chinese delegates met up with and realised a fantastic mutual communication with British art management experts, and also visited many leading venues inside and outside of London during their tour.
